Sally Byng was appointed Director – now Chief Executive – of the Barnwood House Trust in September 2008 and is spearheading its evolution as Barnwood Trust.
Sally’s working life to date has had a clear focus on improving services for people living with communication disabilities. Having worked first as a speech and language therapist in a rehabilitation unit for people with head injuries, Sally went on to develop effective ways of supporting people to rebuild their lives after losing their known repertoire of communication skills; development underpinned by over twenty years of research.
For seven years, Sally headed the Department of Language and Communication Science at City University in London where she was a Professor of communication disability. She has also played a role in developing and commissioning research for people with complex disabilities, through membership of a number of national groups.
In 2000, Sally co-founded and became Chief Executive of Connect – the communication disability network; a charity promoting effective services, new opportunities and a better quality of life for people living with aphasia, a communication disability which occurs when the communication centres of the brain are damaged.
Sally was awarded the OBE for her services to speech and language therapy in 2005 and recently played an integral role in the development of the Department of Health’s national strategy for improving stroke services.
