Day care - Barnwood Trust

Day care

Since 1976 Barnwood Trust has provided a dedicated day care service for older people in need of support, including an increasing number of people with dementia.

It is with this in mind that we are now working towards becoming a specialist provider of day care and opportunities for people living with dementia. As a result, all of our staff members are gaining qualifications in dementia care to ensure that we can provide the most appropriate service – even for those whose dementia in quite advanced.

Manor Centre

After listening to carers, we evolved our name from Manor Day Home to the Manor Centre in 2010, as some of their relatives had expressed an anxiety about the word ‘home’.

However, the service is still located at the Trust’s base on Barnwood Road, Gloucester where we now welcome around 40 guests a day.

Some of these guests self-refer and pay for the service, whilst others are referred via Social Services and receive support with funding. And transport is arranged for guests who require it, using our own fleet of minibuses driven by Trust staff.

A warm and welcoming place

The Manor Centre has a welcoming atmosphere, and a culture that champions dignity, privacy and choice.

Following an initial assessment which includes a visit at home, we work with each guest to plan a relevant programme of activities tailored to their individual needs.

This may include activities to stimulate the mind, such as quizzes, discussions about current affairs, music appreciation and painting; personal care services such as chiropody, hairdressing, bathing, aromatherapy and massage, or more active pursuits such as gardening and physical activity, which help to boost health and wellbeing.

Families are kept in touch with these activities through a monthly newsletter and we have also started a monthly group for carers and family members who would like to receive some support themselves.

The Manor Centre also offers plenty of opportunity for social interaction – plus a two-course lunch cooked in our own kitchens and served at properly set tables by staff members and volunteers who respect and care for our guests with skill and sensitivity.

‘It has taken a lot off my mind because I know Mum’s happy; she’s secure. So I can go off and do my thing knowing she’s absolutely fine. ’

Lesley Harris, daughter of one of our guests
