Day care update – May 2010

Following last summer’s review of our day care provision by Housing 21, we have taken a number of steps to update our services in line with their recommendations.

In particular, we have been working with Housing 21 to ensure that we provide a supportive environment and good person-centred care for people living with dementia.

We have also been listening to carers, who told us that our former name – Manor Day Home – caused some of their relatives to fear ‘being put in a home’. Hence we have evolved our name to the Manor Centre.

Here are some further examples of the actions we have taken:

• We have restructured our staff team and recruited five new support workers. This gives us a ratio of one staff member for every five day guests, meaning we can now extend our services to those with severe dementia
• We have made certain changes to the layout and decoration of our building, so that it is easier and safer for day guests to find their way around
• We have extended the range of activities we offer to include massage and aromatherapy, and also set-up a support group for family members
• We have developed a garden area where we can work with our day guests and grow vegetables for our kitchen
• We are also providing specialist training in dementia care for all of our staff members
