Grant awards news – August 2010

Barnwood Trust has awarded a grant towards a new building to provide a wheelchair-accessible classroom with disabled toilet and kitchen facilities at the Butterfly Garden, an educational gardening and land skills project set up in 2002 to help children and young adults with learning difficulties and behavioural issues.

Currently the garden is worked by over 60 students a week. Duties range from the ease of watering and potting, to tilling the soil in the allotment and clearing ground. The students run a successful vegetable box scheme and help out at the café of the adjoining garden centre. They have established a recycling facility for garden equipment, woodworking workshop, music, drama and art room activities. Last spring they were again working with the Borough Council on hanging basket construction and they planted up the local airport with a seasonal show. As one student said recently, ‘It makes me feel I’m doing work that’s worthwhile’.

Time Banking UK  grant towards the publication of their book about time banking ‘Your Money or Your Life’
Stroke Association  grant to employ a resource and participation coordinator to look into what help is available in Gloucestershire to support stroke victims
SignHealth  grant towards a pilot project to provide an online British Sign Language service for use in Gloucestershire GP surgeries
Spring Centre Trust Fund  grant for a part-time salary to set up a new service for young adults who have a disability
Cirencester College  grant to employ a project manager for their shop, which is run by students who have a learning disability
Hop, Skip & Jump in the Cotswolds  salary for the lead play worker at this play and support centre for children who have a disability
