A welcome break
Newent Association for the Disabled offers services to physically disabled and/or older people, including those who would otherwise be housebound.
For example, through their Sheppard House Day Centre, the Association offers day guests care and companionship, and a range of exercise and recreational activities – including a therapeutic assisted bathing service, supported by Barnwood Trust since its inception in 2007.
A luxury reclaimed
There are two accessible baths, specially designed to give bathers a relaxing massage.
Attendants are on hand to provide assistance to those who need it – and it is one of these Bathing Attendant posts that was funded by an additional grant from Barnwood Trust.
For those rediscovering the simple pleasures of bathing, it’s a wonderful experience:
‘I have been unable to bathe for several years and this is such a luxury’ says Mrs B; and Mr C agrees, adding; ‘My wife has struggled for many years to help me to bathe – it is so good to be able to enjoy a bath without worrying that I am a burden.’
Championing independence
By providing such services, Newent Association for the Disabled is not only helping people with their personal care; it is also enabling them to remain independent and in their own homes for as long as practicable.
