Get set, get sporty!
We received a lovely email from Jenny, the Director of Nova Sports and Coaching, who helped facilitate two sporting events after receiving an organisational grant from Barnwood Trust. With Jenny’s permission we would love to share this story with you below.
“I would like to extend my sincerest thanks for your recent support for two events I have been involved with.
The first was the Gloucestershire Special Schools Athletics Competition which was held on Friday 8th June. The day saw 94 students compete in a variety of events including 100m sprint, hurdles, seated shot put, javelin (with a nerf vortex howler!) and long jump. Every student got a medal in every event they look part, with 1st – 3rd being presented on a podium.
The winning school was then awarded a trophy. The whole day was a great success with the students showcasing their talents and having fun. There were also 400m participation races which saw students, staff and event volunteers complete a lap of the track together. Throughout the day we saw friends cheering each other on from the stands and everyone proudly representing their school. (First 4 photos below).
The second event was for a grant you awarded to Gloucestershire College. This allowed us to host an end of year Athletics Festival for 101 of their students, all who have a learning disability. The day consisted of athletics events including relay races, hurdles, javelin (with another nerf vortex howler!), medicine ball throw and speed jumping.
Students went round in ‘house’ teams and worked together to earn points for their team. For example, in the standing long jump, every team member jumped one at a time from where the last person ended. Their combined team distance was then measured with the winning team (of 14) jumping 25m. Everyone got a certificate for taking part and the winning team took home medals and a trophy to display at college. See the photos below!
With both events we were blessed with beautiful weather and we hope to run them again next year.”
