Wheels For All in the Forest of Dean
This spring Barnwood provided Leonard Cheshire Disability with a Community Spaces Grant of £8,070, which went towards improving the site of the Wheels for All project in the Forest of Dean. The work has been completed and the project is up and running! On 5th September there was an opening event, with lots of people coming to try out some of the bikes and to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
Wheels for All is an inclusive cycling project run by Leonard Cheshire Disability aimed at people of different abilities and includes a base at Pedal-a-bike-away, Cannop in the Forest of Dean. The project builds on taster days run by Leonard Cheshire and there is now a permanent base at Cannop, where people can come and use a wide range of accessible bikes and trikes. The bikes and storage containers themselves were funded by others.
Barnwood Trust provided funding to wood clad their two shipping containers, a ramp to the container, to level the surroundings and for signs to the facility. The site itself looks great, and as you can see by the pictures, offers a large and accessible space where people of all abilities can come and enjoy the bike trails.
The project and aim was to provide an opportunity for disabled people to engage with and take part in a sporting and physical activity alongside everyone – to do things together.
Spaces funding programme
The Community Spaces Capital Grant is to help support communities or organisations that would like to develop inclusive community spaces: places where everyone is welcome to meet and do things together. ‘Everyone is welcome’ means that particular attention is given to helping people who are usually marginalised to feel that they belong in the community; for example, those with disabilities and mental health problems.
As part of our investment criteria Barnwood seeks outcomes for successful applicants to go ‘the extra mile’:
