Voices of the panel – Mary

Photo of Mary

Mary took part in the Accessibility Fund scoring panel, bringing her knowledge of visual impairment and experience supporting disabled people. We asked her about her experience of being part of the panel. Here’s what she had to say.

Why is it important to you that indoor and outdoor spaces are accessible for everyone?

It’s about equality and improving people’s lives. It can be life-changing for some disabled people.

What experience or knowledge did you bring to the funding panel?

My experience of visual impairment and having experience of other disabilities through being a manager of direct payments for people with disabilities.

How did it feel to be part of the funding decision-making process, and do you feel your views made a difference?

I thought it was exciting to be part of the panel and felt I brought a unique perspective, but I also felt everyone else on the panel had something different to contribute.

What would you say to someone thinking about joining a future funding panel?
I think Experts by Lived Experience applying need to be aware that there is a fair amount of reading required, but it was very enjoyable and exciting – anyone who is interested should just go for it.

Has being part of the panel changed how you see your role or voice in your community?

Within the disability community, it’s nice to have a positive impact on other people’s lives, but I don’t really think being on the panel has changed anything for me as such.
