Black History Month 2017 Competition

As part of Black History Month 2017 Barnwood Trust, in partnership with the African Community Foundation, has launched a competition encouraging people across Gloucestershire to come together to design their own community African Shield showcasing what community means to them.

The winning group will receive an African meal cooked in their community for up to 20 people. Groups that want to take part just need to design and decorate their Shield to demonstrate what community means to them. It must be decorated and created by a group of four or more people, including at least one person with a disability or mental health problem, and the group must all live in Gloucestershire.

Once a group has created their Shield they can post or take it to the Barnwood Trust office in Ullenwood (Ullenwood Manor Farm, Ullenwood, Cheltenham GL53 9QT) or the Trust’s office in Barnwood, Gloucester (162 Barnwood Road, Gloucester GL4 3JX).

When groups submit their Shield they just need to include:

  • The groups name and contact details
  • A list of who has taken part (you don’t need to say who the people are with disabilities)
  • A short sentence saying how your Sheild demonstrates what community means to you

If a group would like some financial support to help them create their Sheild they can apply for a Barnwood Trust Small Sparks Grant of up to £50, making sure that:

  • There are at least four people involved
  • At least one of the people taking part has a disability or mental health problem
  • Everyone is prepared to contribute their time, energy and talents

Contact the Barnwood Trust grants team for information on how to apply by emailing grants@barnwoodtrust.org  or calling 01452 611292. Small Sparks Grants are considered on a monthly basis so the last point at which you can apply for grant to help you with your Dashiki is Friday 18th August 2016. The competition deadline for sending in Sheids is Monday 1st September 2017. The Sheilds will be showcased at a celebration event on Saturday 30th September in Cheltenham (please see the Black History Month 2017 programme to find out more).
