Barnwood Trust launches new Opportunities Fund

Barnwood Trust has launched an exciting new funding scheme for people with disabilities and mental health challenges who live in Gloucestershire.

Alongside Barnwood Trust’s Wellbeing Fund, which will continue to provide grants to individuals to enable them to live independently, a new ‘Opportunities Fund’ has been created. The new fund provides people with the opportunity to attempt something new that will enable them to move on to employment, volunteering or give them the ability to help others. It can also be used to fund training or equipment that will enhance their ability to pursue a current hobby.

Gail Rodway, Grants Manager at Barnwood Trust, said:
‘We hope that the new fund will open up a number of opportunities to people who live in Gloucestershire with disabilities and mental health challenges. We have already helped a number of people, in varied ways, and would encourage others to come forward and apply.’

Richard, a keen Boccia player, needed to upgrade his Boccia equipment to enable him to move on from local level competitions to compete successfully at a regional and national level. Richard came to Barnwood Trust and as a part of the Opportunities Fund received a grant for £1,000. Richard said:
‘Receiving the grant from Barnwood Trust has enabled me to purchase world standard, specialist Boccia equipment – this has given me the ability to work towards my aim of becoming a recognised name in the world of Boccia and I have just been invited to join Boccia England’s National Talent Squad’

Ann experiences periods of severe depression and has in the past found this a barrier to getting back into work. As part of her recovery and aim to get back into employment, Ann successfully completed an introductory photography course.  Following this positive step, Ann applied to Barnwood Trust for a grant of £250 to attend a training course so that she could use her photography skills to start her own business. Ann received a grant for the course which has allowed her to go on do this successfully.
