Barnwood Trust has awarded a grant to the Stroud & District Branch of the Alzheimer’s Society to help maintain and develop their Singing for the Brain activities.
These sessions use singing to bring people together in a friendly and stimulating social environment. Singing is not only an enjoyable activity, it can also provide a way for people with dementia, along with their carers, to express themselves and socialise with others in a fun and supportive group. Hidden in the fun are activities which build on the well-known preserved memory for song and music in the brain. Even when many memories are hard to retrieve, music can be especially easy to recall.
The Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading care and research charity for people with dementia and those who care for them. The Stroud & District branch provides support, advice, information and activities for people affected by dementia and their carers. They cover the areas in and around Stroud, Dursley, Wotton under Edge, Berkeley Vale, Painswick, Hardwicke, Bisley, Chalford, Stonehouse and Nailsworth. The Singing for the Brain sessions have been operating for about two and a half years. They take place twice each month at the Stonehouse Community Centre and up to 40 people with dementia and their carers attend.
